Postal Presents; The Orbit Bowl

This naturally looking form was inspired through a light which was found as i did my research on folding techniques. The 'Orbit' looking bowl was transformed from a 2D shape as I played with different shapes and experimenting by cutting the shapes up and joining them together. My task was achieved successful by creating a prototype of a gift that could be collapsed and sent through the mail in an ordinary C4 envelope.

This bowl does not only bring about a pleasant surprise to the reciever but it also engages the reciever in an interactive way when they recieve it and turn it into a 3D object. It allows the user to use it as a bowl or simply a decorative piece on a table, anywhere and everywhere. I allowed the bowl to be a useful object so that the reciever not only uses it once but gets great use out of it over again therefore making it continually usable.

The material used is polypropalane, which achieved the soft natural look of the bowl, allowing the 7 pieces joined together to form a curved look. the aesthetically pleasing bowl was definately achieved creating a sophisticated look of sheet qualities.

  1. When i first saw the design in its cardboard mode, i just instantly feel in love with the shape your design creates. The 7 sheets gave the design a different yet unique look whilst keeping with the idea of modern and contemporary outlook.
One thing i would question is your use of polypropylene in the final design, personally i wished that you created the "Orbit" maybe out of a thicker piece of polypropylene or maybe a sturdier material i.e. aluminum, to give your design a more balanced and stable properties when holding items within it.
Overall i think you've done an excellent job in creating this 2D to 3D object. A lot of intricate details and thought has gone into the design of both its construction and placement within the c4 envelope. Well done! Keep up with the awesome work!

  2. Val, this has been very thoughtfully and extensively designed, and that is shown through the classy and intricate bowl in it's 3d form despite the simplicity in 2D form. The repetition of pieces which combine to form a much more complex form is brilliant. However I think white is a colour that takes away somewhat from the curvature of this, maybe a deep colour could have worked better to accentuate the design features of the bowl better. Well done!

  3. Am really impressed with the 3d form of this. In the 2d sheet form I was not sure if those curves were nothing but glorified joins, but when it was put together it looked awesome. I think someone said it looked like cream and that association has stuck with me. I agree with Shan shan that a thicker material would be more sturdier, plus, if I remember correctly, the thicker model you showed us had a better form.

  4. This design is a perfect solution for a flat pack present. Such as simple 2D shape used in repetition transforms into such a beautiful modern artform. Well done Val.

  5. I really like the idea of your product and how the one shape can be connected continuously to make an 'orbit' like bowl. Only complaint would probably be that the cardboard model you made had a better look to it than your final plastic model hahah. But then again, the structural properties were different so it's only fair enough that the plastic behaved that way. Maybe if it had to be improved, you could have found a plastic which made a similar form as your cardboard model, because that one looked awesome!
